Years ago I practiced Kundalini Yoga in addition to walking 5 miles a day. I found that this combination of exercise grounded me and kept me in shape without being too hard on my body like my previous years of high impact workouts. I stopped practicing yoga when I moved to Pasadena. This was the same time that I returned to my faith, Christianity. I never really thought about it, I just stopped. But lately I have been trying different workouts to find something that I love and can stick with. My new gym Equinox offers 4 different types of yoga, so I checked out Ayurvedic Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga. The Ayurvedic Yoga class made me cry because it was so gentle and the teacher was speaking over us about being kind to ourselves. This is something that I received in my prayer time earlier in the day with God. The Vinyasa Yoga class was more intense and my right wrist hurt for several days afterward from all of the poses.
I started to research yoga as well because I knew that it had a spiritual foundation. I found an article by Mark Driscoll that totally bashed the idea of Christians participating in yoga. Then I found an article by Rajiv Malhotra who agreed that Christianity and yoga can’t really compliment one another. And then I found this article in Christianity Today.
So I’m wondering, can Christians do yoga?
